I usually don't bring work home, but this is something that I wanted to share with the UL family.

I am a Quality Tech Lead for BOEING in Charleston, South Carolina. We manufacture the new BOEING 787 Dreamliner. Our parent company is in Everett, Washington.  They also make the 787, 747,777,etc.. up there.

This afternoon at approximately 11:40 am our first plane built down here successfully passed its final pre take off high speed taxi. Shortly afterwards, it ran down the flight line and lifted up into the air. This is the first time since World War II that BOEING has built a plane outside of Everett. It was also the first for the Carolinas since the Wright Brothers back in the day.

The facility that I work at is not only huge but a sight to see. In two other buildings they make the aft section and the mid body section for the 787. These parts roll across the facility for us to assemble into a plane. They also load into a modified 747 called the Dreamlifter to be taken to Everett for assembly there. This plane also flies across the world to pick up parts from our suppliers such as wings, the h-stab, vertical fin and cockpit area.

Words cannot express the anticipation that me and several of my co-workers have waited for this day. The sun was hanging high and it was just a beautiful day down here. As most of you know, most planes are extremely loud. As this plane taxied by and then flew by, you could barely hear it.

It is made mostly of carbon composite to help make it one of the most fuel efficient planes out there. It is also a first for commercial airlines.

I know that each of us have special moments in their lives but I just wanted to share this with the family.

Cool stuff ! I went to the facility in Everett almost 2 years ago and did the tour. It was breathtaking how much goes into it and the size of the facility. I can only imagine being there day in and day out and seeing a first like that. very cool story
