Author Question on Error Message on Xbox
Bluegrass Flip Posted: 10/16/2008 9:14:21 AM

I am getting this message in the middle of games and it is freezing my game and I have to restart.

"Unable to read from the disc, clean disc and restart console"

It happens on NCAA and on Madden both so it is not the disc.  Has anyone else had this problem and if so were you able to clear it up yourself or did you have to send your unit in?

Any information you can provide is appreciated.

Thanks,

John

John,

I read a lot about this issue under the 3 red lights of hell.  It is a sign that your Xbox is overheating and you will soon get the 3 red lights.  It happened to me.  Not sure if you have a warranty or not, but if you do not I would recommend this site: http://360ringofdeathfix.com/

It happened to me last week.  I didn't have the warranty, and did not feel like paying microsoft $140 + shipping, and waiting 2-3 weeks.  It's probably better to go to Gamestop and buying a used system.  So, I paid the $23 for the repair kit, and decided to give it shot.  I am by no means a tech guy, trust me.  I only know how to turn a pc, and shut it off.  If it doesn't work, I will usually bang it a few times.  My method of fixing things!!  All you really need is some pc tools (T10, T8 screw drivers, double sided tape, and an eraser).  Kinda' sounds like McGiver (sp?).  I followed the video instruction, step by step, and read the instructions.  I was done in about 1.5 hours.  It actually worked!! I couldn't believe it when I turned it on.

Anyway, GL with it.

Thanks for the info.  I was wondering if this was a sign of things to come.  I am not sure if mine is still under warranty or not, but I will check into the link you gave me.  I may go and get a console fan, maybe that will prolong the inevitable.

Just to throw it out there, but i had some luck with compressed air and got another few months out of the system.  Also, i had no problems with Microsoft once mine finally red ringed last spring. I called and gave them the serial number, they sent a box with the shipping pre-paid. All told it took about 3 weeks from getting the ring to getting the new system, with no out of pocket costs on my end

The dirty disc thing might be cleared if you do the clearing of the cache just look on the xbox site for how to do it. I was getting dirty disc with nhl last night and bam did it and it worked like a champ. This happened with my new elite

As far as the red rings goes i called on mine gave serial and they emailed me ups labels but i have to provide my own box and send in at no cost

Gonna try out Jakes idea because my cooling fans seem to be slowing and I don't want my xbox to get the red ring of death. The fact that everything is under ten dollars definitely helps me make this decision much easier for me. Look to get the supplies sometime this weekend or next week, definitely going for the glowing fans too, stuff looks awesome.

I had the same issue about a month ago and I have the answer to fix it!!  You need to clear your cache.

  • Go to the Xbox Dashboard, select the System Blade, and select Memory.
  • Highlight the HD symbol and press Y.
  • Press X, X, Left Bumper, Right Bumper, X, X.

You will see a confirmation message to confirm system maintenance, proceed.

This should take care of your problem.

This is also happening to me.  I cleared my cache and nothing has changed.  If I am out of warranty is it $140 to fix?

If that is the case, I think that I will just go and buy a new Arcade system and put my HDD on it.

Try calling as my warranty was out also but if you have red lights they extend and they only made me provide box to ship in.

You get 3 yrs of protection from the RROD so it doesn't matter if your standard 1 yr warranty is out.

I occaisionally get the dirty disc error. It's very intermittent. I just let it go back to the dashboard and restart the game and all is fine. I think it's more a function of the dvd drive not reading the disc correctly. I guess it is possible that it could be related to the cache but if the cache is filling up then how could I just restart the game and it works (unless restarting the game resets it).

I strongly recommend getting a fan. I use the one that sits underneath and blows air in. It pulls power from the USB port. I usually leave mine on a few minutes after I cut the 360 off so that it dissipates some of the heat. You can feel the air coming out the back.

If you lay your 360 on the side instead of having it vertical, you can still use one of these fans, you just may need to use some tape or something to hold it on. That's what my friend does.

Here's an example of one ( I have one like this). There are many different ones available

The things on the side are just holders you can put a game or something in. I also have a plain white one. You can sometimes find them at gamestop, they had some for $7.99 here locally. They usually sell for like $15-$20.

Don't get the intercooler that fits on the back. They actually do damage and cause overheating from what I've seen.

That's a pretty rough way to do a dvd head cleaning. That's basically what that's doing. You'd be better to get a dvd/cd cleaner disc.

That's not the error I get. Every once and a while when I'm playing a game a gray screen pops up and says "disc is dirty or unreadable." I just click ok and it takes me to the dashboard. I just click the thing and it loads and works fine.

I cleared my cache a couple of weeks ago and I thought that cleared it up but it happened to me again last night.  Next I will get a fan for it and hopefully that will clear it up.  I never had this problem before the EA NCAA football and Madden this year.  Wonder if they have done something different with their manfuacturing process this year?  Has anyone else had the same problem with games other than EA?
